Virtual teams certainly do take a new set of skills to manage. Trust is important and so is feeling like an important part of a team. Often when the team member has little contact with other virtual team members they can feel isolated and under appreciated. Conference calls can help alleviate this.

Very intersting - living in the Caribbean I keep thinking Virtual Teams would be a really good model for us to adopt - between each island costs much in $ and time (delays often) for people to always travel to meet. More and more as we slowly move towards integration (at least in theory:) we need to work across the physical divides. I'd like to take some excerpts from this post to put on my blog if that's okay - with full link back to here of course!

Richard, No surprise that Asia was/is often the last choice for executive expats I knew - 9am NY conf call was (worst case) 11pm in Tokyo same day, and 1am next morning for Sydney haha! That really stretched the meaning of the term "virtual team" ;-)

Today most of the IT developments and programming are done by the offshore teams. The initial challenges faced is communication and cultural differences. But as the times goes, the gap lessens.

Virtual team is one of the best way to minimise cost in today's world.

I have been a member of a virtual team for almost a year now and I agree that it is important for any virtual team manager to pay his members a visit. A get-together would be nice. It doesn't have to be extravagant. A simple dinner or bar hopping would normally do the trick.

Cultural and language differences are definitely two things that should always be considered. I once worked as a website copywriter for a New York-based jewelry store and I greatly appreciate how my American manager would ask me things about our culture, what is socially right or wrong, things like that. (I'm from the Philippines by the way).

While technology keeps making the world a smaller place, the difficulties of handling teams are still there, if not a bit harder now because of all these social and cultural barriers.

Good post Richard - virtual teams can be a real challenge as you outline.

I have been doing some research on trust in virtual teams and, particularly in the early stages of team formation, it appears that the text based comunications that are common in virtual teams can actually help by reducing the impact of cultural differences on forming relationships - interesting eh?

You may find the articles, podcasts and other resources on my Global Integration site or Life in a matrix blog helpful too
